Students all were able to hold each of the furs and make some observations about how it looked and felt. We were able to see the furs of the following animals: muskrat, squirrel, skunk, opossum, beaver, coyote, deer, and raccoon. After each student had the chance to feel the furs, we took turns comparing our heights to the length of the coyote.
We usually get a chance to explore animal furs in January when we learn about camouflage but I wasn't able to get the resource trunk until this week. So, we were able to draw on our past knowledge about camouflage and colors of animal coverings while also drawing comparisons to some of the books that we are reading now, one of which has a raccoon for a main character. Two weeks ago, a new center became available for exploration during our center time. The very popular Magna-Tiles have left the puzzle center and are now with the light board. Adding the light board to the Magna-Tiles building allows the students to explore with light and colors in a new way.
Preschoolers celebrated Fat Tuesday by making Mardi Gras masks and having a paczki taste test. We tasted strawberry and raspberry flavors. Strawberry won! The final count was 9 vs. 7. But, both were delicious! Today, preschool celebrated Chinese New Year. We watched a short clip of a dragon dance, we looked at pictures of traditional outfits and dragons used in dancing. We then rotated among three different stations. In one station, students helped Ms. Rosie to make a tail for our dragon. In a second station, students could choose among several different coloring pages featuring outfits and items that one might see at a traditional celebration. And, in the third station, students attempted to pick out red M&M candies using chopsticks. That was really tricky! We discovered that it was so much easier for us to use spoons because only a couple students had ever used chopsticks before. Today was Career Day! A firefighter with Chicago Fire Department and two police officers from Chicago Police Department did a presentation for us. It was a lot of fun and the preschoolers learned a lot!
Both preschool classes worked together to decorate a large piece of paper today. This was used as the tablecloth at our table during the Parent Appreciation party this afternoon. I hope that you were able to attend and that you had a great time!
Today is our 100th day of school. It's amazing how quickly this school year is flying by! Happy 100th Day!
