Scissor usage is easy and fun to practice at home. First, be sure that your child is using child-sized scissors. Then, simply draw a line on a piece of paper and ask your preschooler to try to cut on the line. At the beginning, they will only be snipping at the paper. That is the first step. After they have mastered snipping at the paper, studnets will then be able to try cutting the paper on a line. Once the preschooler has mastered cutting on a line, you can try to give them more complicated lines to cut on. Zig-zag lines or curved lines are more complicated to cut on and require more practice to master. Below, please find some ideas that you might want to try at home.
- Try cutting different kinds of paper. You can try different kinds of paper: construction paper, tissue paper, wrapping paper.
- Try cutting materials that aren't paper. You can try yarn, packing peanuts, bubble wrap, or fabric. Keep in mind that some fabrics may be too difficult to cut with child-sized scissors. Denim is very thick and difficult to cut. However, tulle or ribbons might be fun to try.
